I have gradually grown uneasy with the concept of wind and solar power being tapped from the top of the bridge - feeling that this strategy is too passive in terms of social interaction. In a wealthy culture where energy is cheap, I feel it is important to confront attitudes to energy production and want to work to the idea of 'people power'. Maybe I have been reading too much Ivan Illich ('Energy and Equity', 1973). For this reason I have eventually come round to the idea of making a bicycle powered generator which can be mounted and transported on a bike trailor, and used in various locations around the city. The idea is to ask passersby to contribute to the production of energy (battery stored) which could then be used during the night time to power the lighting system under the bridge. This would be a kind of toll system, not too different from the system the city attempted to implement for traffic when the bridge was first established. But insead of paying money, people would contribute time and kjoules (calories). Would this also help establish a kind of community of users and providers? Could the interaction itself help change the place?
I informed Torunn about the updated proposal and she was supportive of the idea. She even mentioned that Sandness (next to Stavanger) is famous in Norway for producing the countrys only bike - DBS, which literally translates to 'The Best Bike'. I looked this up on the internet and found some versions come with a small battery powered motor which can be powered through the process of cycling, and again released when the cyclist requires most assistance - a hill for example, or against the wind. Next time I visit Norway I will make contact with the factory and show them my proposal.
