We all remember the embarrasment when the millenium bridge was forced to close shortly after it's official opening. This was due to the amount of swinging due to the weight and rhythm of pedestrians scrambling across. A similar problem faced the Kingston Bridge in Glasgow which had been designed to carry the appropriate weight of traffic, but hadn't been prepared for the congestion problems which cause that weight of vehicles to come to a halt on mass. The resulting force pushing the bridge back and forth, causing the supports to sink. Shouldn't we be making use of these forces, 'designing in' the opportunity to generate or translate this energy, maybe to power the lighting for the bridge... This is afterall how kinetic watches operate, and I have seen torches on the market powered by a quick shake. The huge support columns could be giant pistons....
