'Drop sculpture', 'plop art' or 'the turd in the plaza' were all terms given to work imposed on public spaces in the 50's, 60's, and even into the 70's and 80's. Despite recognizing the problematic nature of the work given these labels, I quite like the labels themselves, particularly 'drop sculpture'. The notion of something being dropped almost literally from the air, sounds so exciting and full of risk. The kind of work I begin to imagine when I think of 'drop sculpture' is full of action and adventure, able to adapt to it's new surroundings and adjust to the difficult terrain. It would have solar panels, wind turbines, and a way of extracting water from a stone. A moon buggy, with wheels of course - context shifting, shape changing. Transport for the survival of your imagination.
